All
Dog Owners should follow the guidelines listed below in caring for
your dog.
- Register
your dog with the ACT Dog Control.
- Keep
your dog healthy by maintaining an efficient immunisation and
worming program.
- Groom
your dog regularly, keep his coat knot and flea free, his teeth
and ears clean and his toenails trimmed.
- If
you feed your dog offal (liver etc) then, as a health precaution.
- Exercise
your dog regularly.
- Train
your dog to respond to basic commands.
- Keep
your dog under control and on a lead in public places.
- Keep
bitches in season confined.
- If
you don’t want to breed or show your dog consider having it
neutered (forget the tale about bitches needing to have a litter
before being neutered; or that bitches become fat
– these are simple myths – a well exercised and properly fed
dog will never become fat.
- Stay
on side with your neighbours especially by being aware of what
your dog does when you are not at home.
- Keep
only as many dogs as your can feed and exercise and comfortably
manage.
- When
holidaying be sure your dog is adequately cared for in your
absence and properly identifiable if he does get out (microchip
and registration tag).
- If
you have to leave your dog in the car for any period of time
keep checking he is not over heating, a car parked under
the shade in the morning can become a hot box in the afternoon.
- Check
as much information of your breed’s characteristics as possible
so that you aware of any behaviour that arises that is
peculiar to the breed.
